How to Use the Atlas

Welcome to the Atlas of Sulerin. Within each of the maps presented here are "hot-spots" which can be clicked to zoom in on an area. For example, clicking on various parts of the above map will take you to a view of a continent, and from there you can click on areas of the map to gain additional details. In fact, there are places of the Atlas where you can zoom all the way to the detailed maps of specific buildings.
At left, in the side-bar, you will find additional controls for the atlas. Zoom Out takes you to the parent map for wherever you are. Legend opens a floating window which shows you what all the symbols used for the Atlas mean. You will sometimes also see eight arrows arranged to point in cardinal directions. Clicking on these will take you to neighboring area maps to the area you are presently viewing. Sometimes you will also see a Historical link; clicking this will take you to the most recent historical map of the area you are presently viewing.

Sulerin and the Su-Laad Solar System

Sulerin is a spherical world that revolves counter-clockwise around the sun Su-Laad. The planet rotates on its axis once every twenty-four hours such that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west; this being the length of a day. Sulerin also has two moons, known as Emmor and Darkling. The moon Emmor is the one that most people recognize as The Moon, it is a beautiful white, speckled with blue and white streaks across its face where meteors have cracked and cratered its icy surface. Emmor is slightly bigger than the moon of Earth and the World of Sulerin is slightly bigger than Earth. Since Emmor is further from the planet then our moon is to Earth, it is only a little bigger in the sky. The other moon, Darkling, is difficult to find because its surface doesn't reflect light as readily, and it often passes un-noticed across the sky. Darkling's surface is black like powdered coal and it is also much smaller then Emmor, smaller even then our Earthly moon, and much further away. Darkling is often passed over as just a darkly glittering star by most commoners.
Sulerin is a similar distance from the sun, Su-Laad, as our own Earth is from its sun, Sol. Thus seasons are similar in respective parts of the world. Sulerin revolves around its sun once every 360 days, and each Planetary view of the World of Sulerin. Illustration copyright © 2001 Mike Lopresti of Sulerin's twelve months are thirty days long. Each month's beginning is marked by Emmor's new moon phase. Darkling completes its unnoticed cycle of phases once every 55 days.
There are a total of seven planets that travel around Su-Laad. These are known, from closest to the sun to furthest as: Cambrion, Vela, Sulerin, Rhaos, Mercater, Nymph, and Hammah. Cambrion is a large desert planet whose temperatures are dramatically hot during the day and icy cold at night. It has no atmosphere as it was long burned away by the heat of Su-Laad. Vela is named after the rain aspect of the goddess Ly'ya, now recognized as Illustree by many worshipers. It's skies are perpetually covered with thick clouds and terrible storms rage across its nearly inhabitable surface. Rhaos is actually two large celestial bodies larger than Earth's moon, which revolve about each other in such a way that their distance apart is constant. This is not obvious to the naked eye of an observer from the planet Sulerin. Rhaos is named after the war aspect of the ancient god Tennet and is so named because of the mighty quakes and changeable nature of that duel world. Mercater is named by the Darini word for ice, it glimmers a very bright blue in the sky and can easily be seen from Sulerin. Nymph is a small dark world riddled with enormous caves through and through, but otherwise deserted and barren, so named because it was once used as a test by humans to root out people with elves in their ancestry from their habitations, as eyesight beyond that naturally given to humans is needed to spot it at all. Hammah is furthest from Su-Laad and is named for the ancient deity of the same appelation. Little is known about Hammah as it cannot be seen from Sulerin without assistance, mechanical or magical.
