In the World of Sulerin, Gods are not nameless and disinterested entities. No, the gods of Sulerin take great interest in what transpires in the realm of mortals and they are constantly vigilant to ensure that the power they receive from mortal worship continues to grow and expand. At the same time, gods are beings of incredible power, but one cannot simply appear in the sky over all the lands and command the mortals below to worship or beware! The Great Pact forbids such revealing of a deity's power and the power of the other gods prevents one rogue god from just doing as it likes and breaking the Pact. Instead, gods work through mortals like a vast and intricate game of chess, never directly revealing themselves but granting powers to chosen worshipers and occasionally making their presence known in mysterious ways. Only tremendous displays of faith, sacrifice, and worship accompanied by great gatherings of followers even allows one of the Great Gods to manifest an Avatar to its followers; the majority of the time a gods followers must act on their own faith.

Recent history has given birth to a new pantheon which has risen above the old. During the time known as the Black Scourge the Dark God rose in power and many of the Ancient Twenty fell from the heavens to be seen no more. Relatively few years later, with the Dark God was banished back beyond the Divine Veil, its worshipers scattered and hunted, new gods rose from the ashes of the old. Some bear the same names as those of old and others were gods of minor consequence before the Dark God came, and some were of unknown origin and entirely new to this world.

Now, generations later, the Great Faiths have against spread across the world to be worshiped by the Great Races, vying for the power of mortal prayer. There are cautious whispers that the Dead Gods of old still visit those who have kept the faith all these years and rumors that gods of the Low Races have grown in power since the arrival of the Great Faiths.
