- Appearance
- Avera are tropical, airborne creatures that dwell over the ocean and near coastal areas.
Avera resemble beautiful parachute like sails, floating through the air with long
tentacles dangling down beneath them. They tack through the wind, dragging their tentacles through the water, or
sometimes carrying a boulder as ballast. Avera range in color from a deep russet orange to golden to a soft green
yellow. Their tentacles, usually numbering between 12 and 24, are the same color as their balloon like bodies. Avera
are only seen on sunny days, it is unknown where they disappear when darkness falls or on cloudy days, perhaps the
Quegans of the seas know, but they say nothing to the "landmen." Avera are quite beautiful and harmless as long as
one does not accidentally touch them, though there are legends and stories of Avera attacking port cities or ocean
vessels with the boulders they carry for weight. For the most part they are peaceful, drifting creatures of the tropics.
- Combat
- Avera employ two modes of combat. If they carry a boulder they will attempt to use it to crush their enemy, otherwise
they can attack with up to 5 tentacles simultaneously against multiple opponents. Damage done to an Avera's tentacles
will not kill an Avera. Each tentacle effectively has 3d4+3 hit points. A tentacle is severed if it loses all of it's hit points.
Avera continue to fly until all hit points of their body have been lost to damage, regardless of how much damage their
tentacles have suffered.
Drop Boulder (Ex): If an Avera is carrying a boulder they can drop it on their
opponent. Boulders typically weigh 200 to 300 pounds. Damage is d6 per 200 pounds of weight + 1d6 points of damage
per 10 feet the boulder fell before it struck it's victim (max 20d6). (See Falling Objects, page 303 DMG)
Poison (Ex): The touch of an Avera causes hallucinations and insanity.
Type: Contact DC 18. Initial damage: 1d4+1 Wisdom. Secondary damage: 1d4+1 Wisdom.
Constrict (Ex): Upon making a successful grapple attack, an Avera may elect
to constrict it's opponent. For each round the opponent is successfully held the Avera inflicts bludgeoning damage of 2d6+3
and the opponent also suffers the effects of the Avera's poison.
Vulnerabilities: Avera suffer double damage from fire and electrical damage.
An Avera slain in this manner bursts into flames and falls to the earth in burning shreds. Creatures within 5 feet of the
Avera's occupied space must make a Reflex save (DC 12) or be caught within the flames and suffer 2d6 fire damage.
Skills: Avera receive a +15 racial bonus to Sense Motive. Avera possess a nearly
psychic predilecation for understanding other creatures motives.
- Habitat/Society
- Avera seem to have developed some primitive social order with larger Avera taking the lead of a pods direction. People
who have survived the touch of an Avera speak of hearing many voices while in contact with the creature, though this is
strongly suspected to be the influence of the poisonous touch of the creature. Avera thrive in the tropics, over waters, or
silently drifting through and over jungles.
- Ecology
- Avera consume sunlight to live. They have no natural predators and exist harmoniously with the sea and their environment.
The essence of Avera is a highly prized and very difficult to obtain substance. Known for its hallucinogenic properties, the
essence fetches a good price on black markets. It is thought that the mysterious gasses which hold the Avera aloft are an
ingredient in the making of Napatha, an explosive substance made by the Banderan of the Desert of the Sinnd. How
natives of the Desert of the Sinnd are able to procure this, considering Avera are not found in the desert, is unknown.
- History
- The Avera are a race of peaceful creatures, and until the coming of the Dark God there was only fables of Avera making
attacks upon vessels. During the Black Scourge, Avera were seen making suicide attacks upon vessels carrying troops of
the Dark God.
