- Appearance
- The Chaos Wraith is a flickering phantom of shadow and texture, borrowing its appearance from it's surroundings, like a
chameleon. Though easy to identify in plain daylight, the Chaos Wraith is difficult to spot in dim lighting, such as a flickering
torch, or in its preferred environs: twilight woodlands and subterranean hollows.
The Chaos Wraith is about the same height as an average human, but seems somewhat
taller as it glides a few inches from the ground, leaving a trail of twisted landscape behind it - the remnants of it's attempts
to blend with it's surroundings. Contrary to what one may assume, the Chaos Wraith is unable to fly, even though it may
appear to hover without touching the ground.
These creatures are vaguely humanoid in shape, but its form is semi-transparent and
borrows from it's surroundings, thus making it difficult to discern exactly what the creature would look like were it not
taking its appearance from its surroundings.
Chaos Wraith's do not appear to communicate among each other, nor with other creatures.
It may be that their minds are too warped to express themselves clearly.
- Combat
- The Chaos Wraith strikes suddenly as if with surprise on it's side, whether or not its opponents were actually surprised.
Ability Damage (Su): When the Chaos Wraith makes a successful
attack it drains one points from a non-physical ability score (Roll d6: 1-2 Wis, 3-4 Int, 5-6 Chr). Double the points drained
on a critical hit.
Alignment Alteration (Su): Any target struck by the Chaos Wraith's ability
draining attack must make a Will save (DC 19) at the end of the encounter. The DC of this save increases by 1 for
each ability score point drained from the target creature. A failed save indicates that the target creature's alignment
has shifted one phase towards Chaotic Neutral. Alter Good/Evil before Law/Chaos. Thus a Lawful Good creature would
become Lawful Neutral, a Lawful Neutral creature would become True Neutral, and so on. Creatures that are already
Chaotic Neutral are unaffected. Alignment changes are immediately noticeable, though victims rarely display any
desire to return to their previous alignment.
Blending (Ex): Chaos Wraiths are adept at blending in with their surroundings,
giving them a +10 racial bonus to all hide checks when moving at base speed and a +20 racial bonus to hide when not
moving.
Limited Movement (Ex): Chaos Wraiths are unable to sustain double their
movement rate for more than two consecutive rounds. Chaos Wraiths will not cross moving water or other liquid bodies.
- Habitat/Society
- Chaos Wraiths wander the countryside and the underworld in generally small and unorganized groups. The only
coordination to their battle tactics is a simultaneous rush by all members of the group. Chaos Wraiths do not
appear to have any formal organization, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has witnessed their
chaotic mannerisms.
- Ecology
- It is thought that one who is slain by a Chaos Wraith, or who has suffered from their taint upon their soul and later passed
on into death, eventually rise anew as a Chaos Wraith. In this fashion the creatures are able to propagate their numbers.
It seems most Chaos Wraith attacks are driven by hunger, rather than out of malice. As these creatures are relatively new
to the world they have no established place in it's ecosystem. Chaos Wraiths appear to have no interest in low-intelligence
(4 or less) creatures and will completely ignore them.
- History
- Chaos Wraiths are relatively new to the ecology of the world. Following the terrible destruction wrecked on the land by
the Dark God's evil servants and the emergence of the new deities there was a time when the reality of the world seemed
to be falling apart as the world readjusted from the powers that had raged through it. It was during this period of time that
odd colorings of the sky, random earthquakes, and many strange new creatures began appearing in the world. Among these
new beasts that entered the world were the Chaos Wraiths.
