- Appearance
- The Eater of Color is a creature of the Ethereal Planes which preys upon travelers there, but occasionally finds its way into
the Prime Material Plane where it is able to cause a greater amount of damage upon the landscape and those who come
across it. The Eater of Color appears as a floating black vortex with smaller tendrils spreading in all direction, into which
all surrounding colors are being ripped and sucked into, as if all colored light within 50 feet of the creature was being sucked
into the vortex, leaving a colorless landscape in its wake. Usually the Eater of Color travels just a few feet off the ground
and at a leisurely pace (Speed: 15 ft.) but when provoked, this strange creature is able to move much faster.
- Combat
- Though usually docile while it rapes the land of its shades of light, the eater of color quickly becomes violent if a group of
adventurers decide to do something about its destructive feeding.
Ability Damage (Su): On a successful touch attack an Eater of Color deals 1d4
points of temporary charisma and constitution damage.
Color Eating (Su): Eaters of color rapidly consume and strip colors and hues from
everything within 50 ft. of themselves. Draining color from an area is a full round action, during which the Eater of Color can
only move at most 15 feet. This effect prevents plants from absorbing the sunlight they need to survive, withering and dying
after one day per hit die of the plant, if they do not somehow regain their coloration. Living creatures subjected to the aura
temporarily lose four points of Charisma and must make a Fortitude save (DC 24) or suffer a morale penalty of -2 to all
attacks, weapon damage, saves, and checks until. Ability damage is recovered normally, but morale effects remain until
the subjected creature regains its coloration. Objects and creatures slowly regain their coloration over the course of 1d10
days. Any creature or object within the aura of an Eater of Color when it is slain instantly regains it's coloration. An item or
being will also regain its coloration if subjected to a rainbow pattern spell. An Eater of Color heals one hit point per
round in which it consumes color.
Incorporeal (Ex): Can be harmed only by other incorporeal creatures, +1 or
better weapons, or magic, with a 50% chance to ignore any damage from a corporeal source. Can pass through solid
objects at will, and own attacks pass through armor. Always moves silently.
- Habitat/Society
- Eaters of Color are solitary creatures. They avoid their own kind; sages speculate that this is because they are selfish
creatures and an Eater of Color can't eat if another Eater of Color has already rendered the landscape barren of hues.
All attempts at communication with these creatures has been unsuccessful. Likewise, their mating habits and origins are
unknown as well.
- Ecology
- Eaters of Color are thought to be a valuable component for invisibility potions and that they may also be useful in the
creation of Spheres of Annihilation. How exactly one captures and extracts these properties from an Eater of Color is
unknown however since the creatures vanish upon their death.
- History
- Legends tell of a time when an Eater of Color escaped into the Prime and appeared in the elven forests of Greentree,
causing great alarm to the elves of the area, until a week later when things started to return to normal.
