Atabin Kotica, The These three tomes of chaos are a series of practica meant to educate and entice the reader into contacting the alien minds of distant realms.
Even as knowledge of these creatures’ power spreads, their presence in this world grows too. Each tome is wrapped in a strangely smooth
material, like plasticized flesh that has been dyed grey. Each is protected by a symbol meant to illuminate the minds of those who read.
The text of each tome guides the reader through mental exercises which erode their moral compass, yet increase their intellect as their
mind is opened to the thoughts of alien intelligences.
Book 1: Protected by a Symbol of Fear (Will save DC26, PHB 290). 1 week reading time. Before the mind can be opened
to the lessons of terrible entities beyond mortal ken, they must become familiar with the terrible fear that contact with such minds engenders.
This book teaches the reader how to overcome their fears by delighting in their sensation. Once the reader begins this tome they become
shaken (-2 penalty to attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws) until they complete it.; having finished the book they
may attempt a saving throw (Will DC 25 -1 per day failed) to overcome it, at which point the reader’s Wisdom is reduced by 1 and their
Intelligence increases by 2. Spells: fear, phantasmal killer.
Book 2: Protected by a Symbol of Sleep (Will save DC 25, PHB 291). 1 week reading time (see below). One round after the
symbol of sleep has been activated a Dream Master Quori (Magic of Eberron pg 149) is summoned. If the reader
demonstrates a mastery of the first book it offers cryptic mentorship of the second book, allowing the reader to complete the book
in one week, otherwise it attacks after accusing the reader of being “unready to accept the mysteries that the multiverse has offered
them. Without the mentor’s help the book takes two weeks to understand. Before the mind can learn the greatest secrets of the alien
consciousnesses it must be first prepared by visiting the dreams of those alien minds for, at this stage, to contact them directly would
be foolishly dangerous for the reader. Reading this book reduces the reader’s Wisdom by 1 and raises their Intelligence by 2. Once
the reader has begun reading this book they suffer nightmarish dreams which cause them to be fatigued during their waking hours
until they have completed it; having finished the book they may attempt a saving throw (DC 25 -1 per day failed) to overcome it, at
which point the reader’s Wisdom is reduced by 1 and their Intelligence increases by 2. Spells: confusion, nightmare,
mind fog.
Book 3: Protected by a Symbol of Insanity (Will Save DC 28, PHB 290). 1 week reading time (see below). Finally the mind
is opened to glimpse the frightful vistas held by great alien intelligences. This book contains mental exercises which prepare the reader for this
maddening event. Once they have begun this book a powerful geas is placed upon them, causing them to feel sickened (-2 penalty to attack
rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws) unless they diligently and obsessively continue reading the book. So powerful is this urge
that should they cease reading the book for more than a 24 hour period they become nauseated. Once they have finished reading the book
they may attempt a saving throw (Will DC 25 -1 per day failed) to overcome it, at which point the reader’s Wisdom is reduced by 2 and their
Intelligence increases by 3. Spells: Glimpse of Eternity (Magic of Eberron, pg 96), Contact Other Plane, Phase Door,
Prying Eyes, Moment of Prescience.
Magical Aura: Strong, as appropriate for the protective Symbol on each book;
Caster Level: 20th;
