Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target/Area/Effect: 1 creature/3 levels
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
When you cast this spell indicate both the target creatures and an object (living or not) which is to hold their attention. Target creatures which fail a Will save become fascinated with the object and watch it intently to the exclusion of anything else. If attacked, a creature affected by this spell is automatically surprised (unless the object of their fascination is the attacker or something held by the attacker).
This spell was originally designed for use with gate guards so that they might be more stalwart in their attentions to those who passed through the gates they watched. However, once the thieves of the city realized this, muggings began to occur just outside the guarded gate while the gate guards watched on in oblivious fascination at the people passing through the gate. Needless to say, the spell waned in apparent usefulness. The spell continued on in more nefarious purposes though. For instance, thief-mages would use it when burgling a home, the owner of the house staring dumbly at some fascinating aspect of his bedpost while the thieves robbed him blind.
The reverse of this spell, Disinterest, automatically negates all effects of the Fascinate spell, as will attacking or harming the target creature.
