Campaign Excerpt: Traveling to Dunnal Krannok

The strange dwarf introduced himself as Tadhg von Artigbrauer, a warrior from lands far to the south. The evening passed and further introductions were made as the party and traveling dwarf exchanged stories, including those concerning their search for fabled Dunnal Krannok. As it happened, Tadhg was also searching for it and had a means of taking the party much closer to their destination. Later, after much conversation, Tadhg used a strange power to open a portal in the earth through which the party traveled.
They found themselves in a strange mountainous land where concentric rows of pushed up basalt extrusions pierced from the ground and straight up into the air, like great natural curtain walls of stone. Like layers of an onion, there were many, many of these strange stone walls, though they were obviously entirely natural. Still, on foot, this terrain would have been impassible. Though the first few walls were only perhaps ten feet tall eventually they rose to heights nearing 200 feet tall, with narrow 20 foot wide gulches between each extrusion.
The adventurers traveled through there until nearly nightfall when we discovered a strange cat-shaped eye cut through, near the top of one of the natural walls. It was quite remarkable, obviously quite ancient and perhaps man made, and nearly twenty feet tall and cutting entirely through the black basalt stone. Looking through it they could see some distant mountains, but one great mountain stood out among the others and if you backed away from the eye to narrow its perspective it was obviously the large, volcanic mountain that it was pointing to. So tomorrow they decided that they would travel to the northwest.
They made camp. It became very dark at the bottom of a gulch between the walls and no sooner had the sun set when Sasha sensed that she was being scried upon. She mention it to the party, but no sooner had she spoken when Tellzan mentioned of having a creepy sensation almost like being watched too. Sasha had barely a moment to cast shape change when suddenly the air became putrid and foul with evil magic that sickened many of the party and eight towering fiery giants appeared, wielding an assortment of weapons. Before some of the party could react, Elena was cut down and slain, Sasha was horribly wounded, and both Al-Rathis and Tellzan took substantial blows.
They bravely fought the giants, but it was deadly dangerous and nearly the entire party was slain but for the fact that nearly all of them fled from melee. Even the mighty Al-Rathis was nearly killed outright. Still, it was a brutally fast battle and were it not for the addition of Tadhg, the party would have certainly been vanquished, but he steadfastly battled against them, allowing other members to escape. Sasha healed a great many wounds, just to have them reopened again. In the end Al-Rathis and Tadhg were still terribly wounded and there was simply no more healing magic left to dispense. The party was all but completely certain that these creatures were sent to slay them, assassins from Titalus.
